AWP Heroes; Protecting Everyday

As Area Wide Protective continues to advocate for work zone safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week, we are proud to share an inspiring story of one of our very own heroes, John Young.

In the traffic control industry, there is no “typical” day. Our TCEs must undergo concentrated training prior to their first day on the job so that they are best equipped to protect people, business, and time. When our protectors are on the road, they must remain alert, as uncontrollable variables are a constant threat to those in and around work zones.

These variables are something that John Young, Oakwood TCE, experienced firsthand. While working a zone, a distracted driver approached and entered the work zone. John saw the oncoming vehicle and alerted those in the work zone by blowing his safety whistle. This whistle provided enough notice for all those in and around the work zone to escape the driver’s path. A member of the welding team on site, commended John for his quick response. Had John not blown his whistle in anticipation of the incident, those in the work zone may have endured serious injuries from the vehicle.
