AWP Provides Traffic Control for the Marine Corps Marathon

Traffic Control Projects, October 30, 2013

After a successful collaboration in 2013, AWP is proud to announce our partnership with the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) again in 2014.

At 9:00PM on Saturday, October 26, a team of AWP employee volunteers gathered together at the AWP Facility in Manassas, VA to make final arrangements before dispatching to the Marine Corps Marathon 2013 race grounds. About two hours later the traffic control team drove a caravan, including a crane truck, eight crash trucks, two stake body trucks, and six pick-ups, to the finish line area near the Marine Corps War Memorial in D.C.. From there, each AWP volunteer paired off with a Marine and brought their vehicle and traffic equipment to their pre-appointed sites throughout the 26.2 mile-long course. Throughout the night these teams set up eight ramp closures from the interstate, and completed the remaining cone drops and closures that could not be completed during daylight hours due to high traffic volumes and jurisdictional restrictions. Using five arrow boards, six water barricades, and 1,600 traffic cones and barrels, AWP’s event team set up over seventy interstate ramp, road, and intersection closures to plot the MCM 2013 course.

After designing traffic control plans for the race course, and months of planning, preparation, and coordinating with the Marine Corps, VDOT, and jurisdictional authorities throughout the D.C. area, AWP delivered the traffic control expertise, equipment, and professional services that protected 40,000 race participants and thousands more Marines and spectators at the 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon. AWP’s event team dedicated over 300 man hours to prepare for and implement the traffic control required for this monumental event. This event truly showcased AWP’s talent for large scale traffic management, and the value of our professional traffic services for major special events on a national level.

A special thanks to AWP’s traffic control employees who gave their personal time, worked from sunset to sunrise, and more; all in support of the Marine Corps Marathon, and for the pride they take in being an integral part of the AWP team. Thank you for representing the biggest factor in what makes AWP great – dedicated people!

As America’s Traffic Control Leader, AWP is proud to have been a part of this nationally significant event by providing the safe, compliant, and reliable traffic services and equipment for which we are well known. AWP looks forward to a continued partnership with MCM for the 2014 MCM Event Series and the 39th Marine Corps Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014!

No federal or Marine Corps endorsement of AWP is implied.
