Keeping You Safer – One Good Catch at a Time

Team AWP, September 20, 2018

AWP’s Safety Culture consists of several proactive safety programs. One of which is the Good Catch – Near Miss program. This initiative was designed to engage Protectors (also known as flaggers) in the work zone and empower them to identify potentially dangerous situations. Additionally, Protectors implement procedures to be proactive and prevent as many incidents as possible. This program cultivates an open environment to report inadequacies and at-risk behaviors, while measuring would-be accidents or injuries.

What is a Good Catch and Near Miss

A Good Catch is spotting and reporting feasible issues and hazards in work zones like a potential problem, unsafe condition, practice, or basic human error. Taking it a step further, a Near Miss is an event that could have resulted in an incident or injury, but did not.

How the Program WORKS

This programmatic initiative creates an opportunity to gain insight into making our work zones safer while strengthening our commitment to safety. Reports are generated from across our operations and then used to design additional training and information that targets the uncovered hazards. As a team, we confront the conditions head-on, putting the active in proactive. Additionally, many reports are testimonies of Protectors who identified a potential danger, but diffused the situations and secured a safe work zone.

This program establishes accountability within our team to ensure we deliver quality performance to our customers. It gives each of us the responsibility to ensure and promote safety. We strive for zero incidents, allowing customers to remain focused on their work, stay on schedule, and above all, remain safe.

“when [AWP protectors] are on my jobs, my stress levels fall tremendously.”

In short, our crews, our team, our organization will always look for ways to provide you greater protection, better service, and overall customer satisfaction. The Good Catch- Near Miss Program is another initiative that allows us to do so.
